Bluetooth LE MIDI

#1

I wonder how difficult it can be to make the Axoloti Buletooth LE MIDI compatible by using a HM-10 module connected to PA2 and PA3.

Does somebody here experimented with this technology ?

This is going to be vague so I don't know if it is actually helpful... I have not experimented with bluetooth and axoloti, but I have tried out a couple of bluetooth modules with a Teensy. My experience was that it was very easy to figure out how to set up the module, but the hard part was figuring out how to interface with existing BT devices that I wanted to use as controllers communicating with my teensy. So it depends a lot on what it is you are trying to do on the other end... what other device you want to use to communicate with your axoloti (assuming it is just as easy to get the module to work with axoloti as it was with teensy). If you are building your own controller device and can pair up a second HM-10-type module as the 'other end', you are likely to have lots of easy success. If you are trying to use commercial BT devices, it is much more variable because bluetooth is quite complex. There are many different bluetooth "profiles" specifying different communication protocols, and the HM-10 is not going to end up being compatible with all of them. So an important first step is to understand the bluetooth setup on any device you are hoping to communicate with.

Again, that's not super helpful, but maybe it's a small start.

Thnaks @kat,

I have ordered a pair of HM10 type modules, as you suggest, I will try to experiment with them first.
That will be my first step.

I think the second step will consist in having a BLE MIDI complient device.
Sadly, neither my Win7 PC nor my phone are BLE MIDI compliant... maybe that's a good excuse to buy a new phone or tablet :smirk:

I have downloaded the BLE MIDI spec and it looks quite straightforward time stamped MIDI messages.

Yamaha md bt01 might be the 0-seconds solution. I will try it. It will work if Axoloti provides power over midi.

if it is just wireless midi you are after, then check out pandamidi.com as well.

Yes it does work and power up.

The only issue I believe with the Yamaha MDBT01 is that you need some other device compatible with MIDI-over-bluetooth to act as a router. And for now only Apple products I believe do that (so if you have an iPhone, there are apps to do the routing), but I don't have one.

@SmashedTransistors Is it the same for HM10 modules? Or can they (or the axoloti) do the routing themselves?
