Using Axoloti to Control a Nord Micro Modular?

#1

Has anyone successfully set up the Axoloti to send MIDI pitch / clock info to a Nord Micro Modular via its MIDI in?

The Nord recognises "Axoloti MIDI" under input options in its MIDI setup panel but does the endless "looking" and not making a connection.

Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Have you tried using a midi interface(if you have one) and connecting Axoloti via the midi-din instead of the USB midi?

And then assign that midi port to Nm-1?

#3

So >

Axoloti MIDI Out to MIDI Interface Din In
MIDI Interface Din Out to Nord Midi In

?

Will have to see if I have an older box somewhere... I have a USB M-Audio Uno which I use to program the Nord, will try that.

#4

Yes, BUT..... I am not sure that you can use the same midi port for routing between Axoloti and Nm1. Try it out and see if it works

...... You might need a midi port for each of them....

#5

You mean, routing MIDI through Axoloti for the Nord Modular "PC" editor midi connection? I believe that requires SysEx support, while Axoloti does not support SysEx. Better use a regular USB-Midi interface connected to your PC/Mac for that.

Sending MIDI notes/controllers/clock from Axoloti to the Nord Modular over a DIN Midi cable should work fine.

Thanks all, think I was getting things confused regarding the ports and hookups on this.

Just trying to send basic MIDI information from Axoloti to the Nord. This is the test patch on the Axoloti, just a squarewave LFO going out to MIDI trig:

And this is the patch on the Nord - I want to get the squarewave to trigger the envelope:

The Nord's MIDI light is flashing so it is getting a signal from the Axoloti but I'm not hearing anything from the Nord. I'm an Axoloti AND a MIDI noob so assume it's something simple

Thanks again for any help.

Looks fine, is the Nord Modular configured for midi channel 1?

#8

Yes, double checked that - all on channel 1. The MIDI receive light on the Nord flashes at the same rate as the squarewave LFO in Axoloti so it's getting that far... But the incoming signal isn't triggering the patch.

These are the patch and synth settings in the Nord which are default as far as I know. Is there anything here that needs changing?

Seems to be a Nord issue, rather than an Axoloti one as the Axoloti signal is clearly being recognised as "incoming" by the Nord.

Ah, you need to have a positive value on the velo inlet of midi/note/out, without connection it has a zero value. A midi note-on with velocity zero is really a note-off by the midi standard.

#10

So does that mean I should just change all the 0 values in the velocity options to at least 1? Doesn't seem to make any difference I'm afraid...

#12

thats caught me out a few times too

#13

Ah, that's it - perfect! :grinning:

So, what would be the basic set up for the MIDI out objects in Axoloti that don't have a Velocity input, like midi/out/cc for example? How do you provide them with a constant/positive value?

Thanks again for your help, great stuff.

#14

MIDI continuous controllers do not have a velocity. Value zero for a CC does not change the meaning.

It's only "note on" with velocity zero that is specified to mean "note off".

I see - thanks again for your help on this.
