First off, Hi
There's no obvious place to ask general questions to the community, i'd have opted for Lounge but was unable to post there .. it also seemed momentarily impossible to contribute or reply, perhaps relating to Level 0 trust status or something, but it felt like a bit of an obstacle which i'd imagine a smallish developing community could do without if you want to promote involvement (i understand that spammers can run riot, but anyway, i'm here now, please change the category as you see fit : )
I'm in no doubt i'm the target audience for the Axoloti Core - long time Nord Modular and Max/MSP user and general tinkerer
But therein lies my problem - too many existing projects to be casual with my time commitments going forward and (even though very modestly priced) with a young person to look out for i need to be especially careful with all outlays ... so i'm cautiously checking that it'd be a commitment i could do justice to .. so it doesn't end up in a drawer with good intentions and sees no real action ( a bit like my launch release R-Pi for which i did at least configure a headless USB Host script)
So lots of potential new user questions which i'm 1st-time-poster excusing myself any responsibility to have RTM'd or searched the Forum/FAQs for answers for, i just need to get a feel for whether i'm in or not
Can someone point me to an audio/video submission anywhere which shows the character of the core oscillator(s) and filter responses in a very stripped back way - demo patches which show complex arrangements don't help me judge the character of the sound .. there's massive potential in patch complexity to generate satisfying sound, but i'd be keen to hear what the basic elements sound like - if such a demo exists - or something approaching that ?
From the latest release notes i wasn't entirely clear if it was possible to audition your live patching in the style you can with Nord Modular e.g. ?
The comments about USB host compatibility give me a good feeling, but has anyone observed an issue or quantified the through latency if you wanted to take a USB class compliant controller and send its 'regular' midi commands straight through to the DIN out .. i.e. is this as optimised for latency as i'g guess it is for the Kenton USB host e.g. ?
If using it in that host capability, is there scope to construct smart MIDI filtering to the incoming data e.g. from the very simplest of concepts like scale correction or mapping/swapping messages and so on
if it's currently not dealing with sysex at the moment, is this because it's not worth the effort or not considered useful .. could it (does it) just pass straight through in this host capacity ?
is it possible to do anything like processing that isn't tied to a module with preconfigured ins/outs (sorry, i genuinely haven't read enough to dismiss certain ideas about what may be achievable) - and is this something for which a user could write a bespoke utility (i.e. a specific module which parsed packed sysex data that was nor plain readable ?
i see a few indications about the editor possibly requiring a later os than the one i run and other potential conflicts if Xcode is installed - will it be doable with minimal headaches if i try on a strictly frozen on Mavericks Mac Mini which has Xcode installed already ? I don't seem to have java installed
How hot are the DC coupled outs - there's mild interest in the Nord G1 community that the DC coupled headphones can serve up almost +/-4v - if it's hot enough to be worth patching then there may be scope for MIDI to CV fun
In terms of exploiting streaming audio files, is it possible to do much more creative things besides playback - can audio be a mod source, could you scan through an audio buffer or slice it etc - just some small points i haven't stumbled across whilst browsing - basically, tell me anything to sell its USPs on that front (i guess it doesn't record to sd yet)
Is the current revision subject to an upcoming update - i notice that it has a time machine facility too ...From the site: Orders placed today will ship on Aug 26th.
This is the 31st, in all seriousness, what's the rough delivered turnaround for a uk order (i have target date to plan for)
too many questions i know, but finally, can you select patches ? i presume so, but the method isn't obvious to me and if anyone would like to expose the teething problems or perceived issues as things stand today i'd be all ears .. my potential for contributing to the forward momentum would be reliant on things being pretty much usable as is with the hope that enhancements will follow
thanks in advance, part responses are great - i can edit this post to reflect that points have been covered
Edit: @thetechnobear does tackle most below, but there may be a few more insights worth sharing for sure - I'm increasingly sold, but the lack of live patching is a pity
