I notice some objects are wider than others, but don't see how the screen dimension of an object are defined?
What am I missing?

I think it's to do with the names of parameters/inlets/objects or something. Who knows?
not entirely actually...the name and (sub)folder you put your objects in can also make them crazy wide.
What I verified was that the width increases to handle longer names for inlets. This makes sense.
Why file location would be involved doesn’t make sense to me, and sounds like a bug.
Either way, the secret is in the java code, and should not be very difficult to locate.
the objects name is shown on top of the object, if you have a contrib file in subfolders like ab/midi/stuff/special/patternmaker (silly example) this will show up as a whole and take up quite some space. at least it used to be that way and this was actually the reason for some to save contrib objects they used often in their personal objects folder...
