March 2016 - Effects Patches (challenge/discussion)

very nice reverb from kausto...

Continuing the discussion from Reverbs creation:

Why don't we use a few weeks this month to ask for different theme "subjects" and then run a poll, we can then run down the proposition list for the next few months. If most of you are ok, I'll create a special discussion thread for it.

#24

Thanks. I'd recommend to use latest one, called LushFDN. Regarding FX-Challenge i wanted to contribute something but could not find time to prepare this.

Maybe i'm a bit late, but i tried the patches, and i'd like to give some feedback (also, i'm so terribly sorry i did not partecipate this month, but as i said earlier zero inspiration, and i put all of my efforts in programming those tables).

To all of you: i'm quite disappointed, because nobody has put a master volume knob before the output.
You should be ashamed.

@JeromeB : awesome. You did a great job with your patch. I wished i could record some of the produced sounds, i got glitches and bleeps and all of the amazing stuff you could want from a bitcrusher.
However, i noticed a very slight stereo imaging, even with the stereo knob set to zero. I think is a problem of (sigh) order of execution. You should move the two mixer objects below everything they have on the left, and the audio output object even lower than that. This way you let the two signals be processed the same way before feeding them out.
I don't like how the stereo expander is implemented, it muddens the sound when the dial is halfway, and basically it's usable only at the extreme settings.
Good choice to put that highpass filter before the effect, sounds very nice.
Also great resource management: 7% for such an effect is pretty decent to me.

I'd say: make a stomp version of the effect, maybe mono: everyone will love it!

@mtyas amazing patchwork, as always, were you inspired by the aira mx1  ?
It's nice to have a performance dedicated effect, especially because you can use it to make rythmic stuff. I made an hip hop beat out of " Rain Sleep Sounds White Noise | Fall Asleep, Fight Insomnia, Stay Sleeping All Night Long | 10 Hours ", which is pretty sweet if you think about it.
However some effects are just not usable enough (like the flanger, it's annoying to have it on all the time). The sequencer does not allow 16th triggers (which could be easily implemented with some logic patchwork, using the clock as a "reset" source for bool triggers).
I can't see this patch as an actual stompbox, either because of the huge resource consumption or because of how "general" it is.
Great work, overall!

@rbrt Your patch is my favourite. It's simple as hell, but it does it's work almost perfectly.
Only flaw i found is: once the loop is recorded, there's no way to manipulate it (at least slowing it down or pitching it up, please!)
You already made the standalone object, but the save feature with the index is just toooo juicy to have. Please :baby_chick:
I'm happy i have sold my kaossilator pro. Who needs it now?

@philoop i'm sorry, but i could not test your patch, it gave me red errors and could not even load the patch.

Good competition, ultimately. A few entries but really interesting ones. You have my blessing.
However, if it was for me, nobody would have won this challenge, you would all have been disqualified for not putting the damn master volume knob.

I'd propose, for the next challenge, to rethink some aspects of sound synthesis.
For example: why only audio effects? Why don't we have effects for control rate signals?
What would a tap delay sound like, if applied after an envelope? And a chorus?
Also, why don't we use filters as shaping tools for lfos? What privilege do s-rate signals have that k-rate don't?

@Sputnki
btw I updated the standalone object to 'save with index'
(looper_FB_mono,it's in the community library)
...pitch/direction is definitely something I will try to implement,
just need to learn some more coding...:lemon:
@JeromeB
I love the crusher!!

#27

Have a nice day on the beach.........

Seashore FX5 this version will work only if you sync libraries, due to some axos from me and @jaffasplaffa.
SeashoreFX5.axp (57.5 KB)
Embeding the Delays also caused the problems in the last competition for me,so i contributed the ECHO1Y.axs,
and hopefully next challenge no one sees red...:smirk:

Thanks for your feedback @Sputnki ! I must rework the stereo expander. I don't like noise on the right ear when play with delay knob and stereo expander frequency knob. I'm agree with that. I moved the 2 mixers below everything they have on the left, but this take no effects. I look for a better solution to increase stereo depth. The @kausto reverb is a very good solution.

Thank @rbrt, I'm playing with your looper !
