Joystick / 5k potentiometer

#1

Hey all,
I'm working on a build that will use a joystick as an x/y mix between four waveforms. I've struggled to find joysticks that don't automatically return to center, but I've found what I'm looking for with a handful of different RC controller gimbals. The only issue is that they use two 5k potentiometers, and everything I've seen says the Axoloti wants 10k pots.

Will using 5k pots damage the board? Will they just not work? I'm really new to hardware development, so any help is much appreciated.

All the best,
Brennan

5K pots will work just fine.

Also, you can get pretty cheap joysticks buying xbox/ps joysticks on ebay. They are pretty easy to open and pull out the spring so they dont jump back to the middle.

just don't by these:

their range is very limited. Only 10-15° of movement (starting from middle position) gets you 0 or 64 values. So they are very difficult, if not impossible, to handle precisely.

Just a warning, learned by experience... you get what you pay for..

Thanks everyone. I think I'll try some of those thumbstick controllers before spending the $25 on a costlier stick.

This is the one I was looking at: https://www.robotshop.com/en/hitec-2-axis-joystick-gim-01.html#product-reviews

The thumb stick looks a little brutal for my liking, but I figured I could either replace it or learn to live with it.
