Classic analogue synth

#1

Are there any existing patches for Axoloti that sound more or less like a classic analogue synth? Something Minimoog-ish, for example?

I'm not asking for a lot of features - just a nice sound that can be used for some real-life music playing

this is always a 'tricky' problem for digital synths...

the essence, I think its to look into what makes something 'sound' analogue, theres alot of stuff on the net about this, and people opinions. mainly its about adding 'imperfection' or randomness, often subtly -including distortion, detuning, oscillators/lfo having a bit of variance in phase/pitch. more 'difficult'/cpu expensive is non-linear behaviour e.g. envelopes/filters.

theres are few things in the community library that are good for this.
the best starting place is @johannes filters, see https://sebiik.github.io/community.axoloti.com.backup/t/jt-contributions
these really do help alot, I've not tried the distortion, but id suspect these also will help alot.

also trying different envelopes, plot them on the scope.

and as i say, add some subtle randomness...
also in axoloti, the lfo/osc and all perfectly in phase by default, so add a tiny bit of phase variation per voice could be good.

hopefully with experimentation you'll get something you like.

... and definitely spend some time exploring the community library (so make sure you are on 1.0.10), there is a huge amount of content there, that goes beyond 'vanilla' oscillators/filters/envelopes)

bare in mind, its much harder to 'emulate' something than to come up with something new (that also sounds good).

(my personal favourite synthesis with axoloti is not VA, but FM... which plays to axolotis strengths)

To get the best sound, dont start with the filter & envelopes, start with the sound source itself, the oscillators.

Id say the best way to get "mini moog sound" would be find some mini moog wavetables and convert them to Axoloti format and use them as sound source. There are lots of them out there. I get the most fat sound of Axoloti with wavetables. But it is up to you judge what you think is the best, but do yourself a favour and start with the sound source......

And THEN go on to filters envelopes behaviour etc..

If you put a flat sound through a fat filter... Youll still get a flat sound out of it. Maybe beefed up a little bit. With reference to the old saying "you cant polish a turd"...

Thanks for your answers. I see what you mean, and I will start my journey towards 'the perfect imperfection'

Yeah. There are many objects to chose from, som has more "analog feeling" than others. Like techobear says, the filters are also very important and its good to check them all, I guess.

EDIT: Maybe check the demo patch called "Saw mono". It is a basic monophonic saw synth.

The "sawmono" demo patch is definately not bad! I didn't pay attention to it to begin with.

To get a useful starting point I just needed to turn the three env buttons all the way to the left.
