502 bad gateway errors

#1

hi @johannes i guess. every now and then when i try to access the forum i get a 502 error. this seems to be happening more often in the morning hours (europe) and occurs about once a week. is this a known issue? has anybody else experienced these bad gateways?

#2

@lokki I experience the same; in the mornings I often get bad gateway and I had it this morning too.

#3

We've had an outage this morning that was caused by lack of disk-space, which was caused by site backups not being automatically deleted as they should - perhaps the lack of space has been causing issues before hand.

Johannes has now cleared some space, and I'll keep an eye on it and in the future delete backups manually if necessary.

if you get errors in the future, let me know exact time (include timezone ) and the I can check the discourse logs to see if there are any clues.

also it would be useful if you check to see if you have errors with axoloti.com (rather than forum), this will enable us to determine if its the forum software/web server or potentially host/networking issues.

as always, the more info we have the more likely we can identify the underlying issue.
(but as I said, I suspect it was most likely disk space issues.)

#4

cool, will give you more details if it happens again. thanks.

#5

error 502 happens too often last few days.

i know nothing about the machine where this forum is hosted, but if the problem is something like disk space or memory consumption, i would offer to move it to more powerful machine at the datacenter where i work. feel free to PM me if interested.

#6

thanks @chaocrator its hosted on digital ocean, I think its related to diskspace, and the backup sizes.
(of course, the forums older, so database is every increasing in size)

ping @johannes

what do you think - diskspace related? it seems like the backups are getting pretty large, compared to the available diskspace.

#7

btw, if it's running out of disk space, i could offer some space for remote backups too.
at no cost, of course. as a little donation to community.

#8

I have also experience that Axoloti forum has been offline more than usual over the last few weeks.

#9

Glad to have found this topic. This has happened to me several times over the past few months, and never before that. I was worried that the site was going down!

Optimistically, I have learned better how the Wayback Machine works

#10

Yeah, it's happening more and more.

#11

Yep. It’s frustrating.

#12

Yep. But good that it actually comes back after a few days. Imagine all the knowledge here lost.

#13

Is it possible to make some kind of backup?

#14

Yes indeed. I really fear that. Without this forum i would be lost.

#15

Yes. I think it might be possilbe to mirror it (i guess at least the html-generated contend). But i don't know if everyone here would want that. i would rather ask about permission before i'd try it but @johannes wouldn't answer, would he?

#16

Seems like @thetechnobear has some forum superpowers too.

#17

Any updates on this? It's almost 502 90% of the time.

#18

Yep. It’s extremely frustrating!

#19

I am glad that the forum is back for now, it seems like it was permanently 502 for three weeks straight

#20

Where are axoloti users going when this forum is down? It might be good if there were a more-or-less agreed on place. The AKSO forum (https://forum.zrna.org/)? The DIY synth subreddit (www.reddit.com/r/synthdiy/)?
