Next-gen and mini Axoloti hardware discussion

#265

I'm excitedly reading this thread every other day - it's had so much activity. I'll say it again: I can't wait for the hardware with more sram! Cheering you folks on!

#266

@axoman - I am sure you would be more then welcomed in the land of the sand gropers, good ol Western Australia, I am sure all of them would get your sense of humor. !! Might be a bit slow for you though.... :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

G'day mate!

I had to check the Wikipedia for Sandgroper! I thought it might be Australian slang for a pervert living out in the outback or something like that, kinda like good ol' Mick from the Wolf Creek movies. But wow, it appears you actually have a miniature version of those Graboid monsters living underground, just like in those Tremors movies

Crikey, I love Australia even more now and cannot wait to settle there some day, hundreds of miles into the wild isolation of the Australian Outback where I can escape modern society - must be absolute bliss!!!

Anyway, thanks for the support mate! I say bloody G'day to you, and don't forget to give my regards to Skip!

@urklang

Any news on release? Is there any chance that it might happen before christmas? Would be really great as a christmas present for oneself

"Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit." - Molière

Quick update:
- I'm working on scaling up production now, including optimizing a few things for manufacturability and cost. I've been stuck traveling for some Zrna/FPAA business stuff.
- The SMD TRS jacks shown here are just for testing. The final jacks will be through-hole and threaded for easier panel mounting. The layout supports either style.

Stay tuned for more details!

I know I am getting ahead of myself here a bit, but I would like to suggest it is called the "Salamander".

#271

Sorry, don't mean to stress either you or Molière

Look forward to have one in hand, and it looks very promising

#272

Sorry I'm late to the party, just got my Axoloti and still learning/playing with it.

I skimmed over the thread, but I'm not clear: What are the main differences on this next-gen board vs current Axoloti Core? I can see it has a small footprint, probably because of the 3.5mm used, right? Also I guess more CPU power? Would it be fully compatible with current Axoloti patches?

#273

@kr0n, here's a summary of the changes:

  • STM32H7 processor clocked at 480Mhz, roughly 3x clock rate increase
  • 32 megabytes of SDRAM, 4x increase over Core
  • Roughly 6x more SRAM available for patch use: 640k vs 100k
  • Configurable IO
    • input 1: right mono balanced or aux stereo
    • input 2: left mono balanced or primary stereo
    • output 1: headphone or right mono balanced
    • output 2: primary stereo or left mono balanced
  • Fully compatible with legacy axoloti patches
  • USB-C for power/data and host
  • Much smaller: only about 60% of the area of Core
  • Comprehensive test points in standard orientation around edges for expansion building
  • Expansion stacking: pcb components are all small enough to fit under the height of a standard header
  • Compatible with the MIDI DIN breakout section of Core (and similar MIDI breakouts)
  • Super secret unannounced features in the areas of alternate dsp engines and eurorack/CV interoperability

"Super secret unannounced features" :zipper_mouth_face:
I bet I am going to be able to control it with my brain...

#276

If you want to take pre-orders, count me in.

#277

Actually, I think I know what the "Super Secret Unannounced Feature" is.

Was just watching this, and I'm pretty sure that if she had not been interrupted by the presenter at the end, her final comment regards what she's been up to in 2019 would have been ...

"I worked with Urklang Industries as a beta tester for the new Axoloti board. I can patch anything your heart desires."

Pretty sure that's it

#278

+1 for pre-order too, looks very promising

#279

+2 or 3, really excited for this. Thank you urklang!

#280

Looks amazing! Reading your comment here.. is live patching going to be part of the super-secret unannounced features?

#281

I know I am getting ahead of myself here a bit, but I would like to suggest it is called the "Salamander".

Hellbender!

#282

That or 'Mudpuppy'.
No matter what it's called, I'm in for it!

#283

I know these things are never clear cut and I don't want to seem pushy, its just that I have only just heard about the axoloti, and it is something that would be very handy for my gigging setup so am interested, but don't really want to get something if it is only few months out from something new, as currently everything is going through my ipad anyway and the first months of the year are quiet.

What is the rough sort of timescale before this is something that is useable and purchasable? Under 6 months?

#284

6 months feels like a worst case scenario to me. I'm thinking in terms of weeks, not months. My goal is to open pre-orders before the end of the year and then ship early next year depending on how long the first production run takes. Smaller runs take about 10-14 days. That'll vary a bit depending on the size of the run.

#285

count me in for the preorder
