Mixer clipping issue

#1

I just got everything working and started experimenting.
The first thing I noticed is the range of the Mixer module.
Connecting something to a Mixer module heavily distorts the signal;
the reason seems to be that every setting of the mixer above 1.0 is clipped, but the range is 0-64. Because of the clipping I would not normally use anything else than a setting of 1.0, which leaves practically no room for 'mixing'.
This is noticeable when connecting a simple Sine > mixer > audio out. with a Mixer setting of about 10 it already starts to sound like a square wave.
Is this a bug or am I missing something?

Do you have a mono jack cable plugged into the output?

#3

yes, I think it is.
I think I remember having read something about that. should I try stereo jack?

#4

Yes, use a stereo split cable!
This is a design issue, a mono jack shorts (overloads) the right output channel, and this causes distortion on the left (mono) output.
Also, do not use a straight stereo cable into a balanced input of a mixer, since the balanced input will "see" the difference between left and right. If the output signal from Axoloti is mono, the output is mainly noise (if you crank the gain) since left and right are equal...
As an alternative, you can plug a mono jack into the stereo output, but plug it only two clicks deep. That will connect to the right output channel.

asking out of curiosity: would sending the same signal and flipping (*-1) one of the channels just before audio out inside pacher create an balanced mono signal?

yes

When I use a straight stereo cable into my Xenyx QX1202USB the output volume is very low with no distorsion . If a plug out the cable from Axoloti for 1 centimenter the ouput volume is high
What should I do to get a high output ? I'm very confused .

Use a stereo splitter cable (often called "insert cable"),
Stereo jack into Axoloti line out, dual mono jacks into your mixer.

(stereo jack from Axoloti into balanced mixer input will only receive the difference between left and right output, mono jack into Axoloti line out causes distortion)
