After mackemints drummachine with FM synthdrums, which you can find here, I thought 37% CPU was too much to add this to an integral synt-arp-rythm machine that I'm working on. So I put a couple of samples on the SD card (sorry I cannot upload). And simplified mackemints patch to this:
drum machine_v2.axp (26.1 KB)
Six samples, 4 patterns, CPU down to 9%.
Sounds steady to me. I thought I'd share. Let me know what you think. Is this the right approach? I'd like to add changing velocity per step, and introducing some swing.

Depends on what you like. I personally like a drum synth more than a sample player because of the tweakability. But a lot of sounds just can't be made without samples. So maybe the best way for me would be to combine both worlds.
