Choosing a laptop to run Axoloti Editor

#1

I need a new laptop on a budget. Is anyone running the Axoloti Editor on a budget entry level consumer laptop (c.£150) and are you experiencing any performance issues? i.e. something like this:

1.5GHz / 4GB. I won't be running any other CPU intensive software apart from general web browsing type stuff.

Any other recommendations welcomed!

It does run on my Z8350 Linux box, quite fast too - if there are any constraints they would be Windows, the memory size (I have 8GB) or the quality of the USB ports...

I recently bought an old, refurbished (grade B) Dell E6540 and works fine on that running Windows 10. That particular model is beyond your budget but I mention it in case you want to consider the refurbished route. I had ruled out second hand purchases but the refurbished-with-warranty one was not something I had considered until I came across the (UK based) company Tier 1 at a technology in educational show. I can recommend them based on my experience. The only thing to factor in is battery life is going to be reduced. I have no affiliation with Tier 1, btw.

I would also recommend asking around nerdy friends/relatives. They may have upgraded and be willing to give away/sell their now unused, gathering dust previous laptop.

@kjw

I do the same in Denmark, with a company called Bluecity.dk. You can buy used with warranty. I bought 3 Macbooks there for the family some phones too. One of the Macbooks had a few issues, but they fixed it right a way, cause of the warranty. The last Macbook I bought used, NOT from that place......... started crashing the day after I came home and never stopped again... So it was definately worth it buying it with a warranty from that Bluecity.dk.

I am sure they have a store like that in your hood too, @ghostly606. You can probably find a refurbed real laptop, not an ultrabook for 150€ that can run axoloti easily.

Managed to get a Dell Latitude 6400 machine (refurbished) on eBay for £50 with a slight issue with the screen. Apart from that the battery is strong and it is in excellent condition. Result! Thanks for advice everyone!

Only problem is I can't get the editor to work now.... may have to update to Windows 10 from Windows 7...

I've been running it on an hp stream x360, seems to work fine so far. Takes a bit longer to start up and compile but otherwise not noticed any problems.
(Celeron, 2gb ram etc.)

If anyone's interested, I managed to get editor to work on using build 1.0.11 rather than the latest 1.0.12-2, had exact same issues as in this thread:

the only thing i would really bother about is HDMI port,
since mainstream laptop screens are usually not that high resolution, and it's not convenient even for moderately complex patches.
any machine based on something better than atom is usable for patcher. actually, atom-based machines are usable too, but they are horribly slow.

Yeah I have an extra display for my Axos, that helps a lot. I have 3 Axos and they are impossible to fit in one laptop screen :slight_smile:
