Axoloti as EURORACK Module?

modular

#21

100 modules and you still want to expand?

Sounds like you have bad GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).

My plan is to use the Axo to control modules, triggers, gates and CV's rather than use it as a sound source, but I do like your idea of having it as a module that is solely controlled by analog CVs. I think I'd look for or build something that has a bigger analog side capable of handling the much higher signal levels modules put out.

Not so much GAS as I am a manufacturer of Eurorack modules (www.synthwerks.com) so need some systems to demo product with, at least that is my excuse for now, but I have been building or buying Eurorack modules for over 5 years so that is not too bad. I'm selling a quarter of my rig or more now in an effort to streamline things, I also recently got a Nord Modular G2 so need less (I also have a G1 but will be selling that soon). The Axo just appeals to me as a small amount of space that can be configured into many different "modules" as needed. I do wish there were more inputs and outputs to modify sound through it but at a cost as cheap as it is, multiples are not out of the question. I have many modules currently that cost multiples of what the Axo cost and may just replace them if it works the way I imagine it to. I had a Axo for a week or two (until I got the Nord) and sold it but I did like its sound. I have been buying and selling synths since my first VCS3 back in 1975 so my studio is always in flux.

Yep, definitely GAS.

lol

Do you still have the VCS3?

I'm just getting started on building a modular synth.

I originally bought the axo to use for guitar effects (reverb and delay mostly) but it lead me to discover eurorack and the modular synth scene so I decided to put it in a rack rather than in a box.

Here's the photo of it in the rack case I built I've been meaning to upload for a week or so.

Still waiting on parts from china to do anything more yet.

Will keep posting as I progress

Sold the VCS3 decades ago, along with the two Synthi AKS I also had. Bought and sold for about the same I spent on the, (around $500 each). If I still had them, they would probably be pretty beat up after 40 years!. Since I am not rich, I have always sold/traded gear to get new gear and have owned lots of classic synths (Oberheim 2-v and 4-v and SEMs, 3 Sequential Pro-Ones, KYMA, etc.) that would be major bank today if I still owned them. They always went away to get something newer.

As you get your design more finalized, go to Front Panel Express (or the EUI equivalent) and have a panel made. I have used them a bunch of times for custom pieces and their design program is a free download and will price out your panel after you design it. They now do photo etched front panel graphics too so you can make them really great looking.

More inclined to do it myself, not really too concerned with appearances and budget is tight.

Shipping costs to Australia make many of those types of services uneconomical to use from here.

I'd rather they look a bit punk and ghetto anyway rather than all slick and commercial

No plans to develop a commercial product at this stage.

I was going to try the printed, laminated and glued method next and have another go with toner transfer as well for the panels I make for the modules I'm building.

Shame you weren't able to keep all those old synths, I know how you feel though.

I had a fender rhodes piano I bought and sold cheap in the late 80's because it was too big and heavy, wish I had been able to keep it now, they are highly sort after these days.

Where in AUS are you ?
I'm in Sydney North Side.
Hard to find out if anyone is from here...

#27

South West WA, near Albany, not convenient meet up distance I'm afarid.

I'm going to combine the axoloti with a cv.ocd over midi to get the axo->cv-out trickery I need.

Won't be integrated as a module, but will save some space in the rack

@dreamer

I am curious about how many CV out you expect to get out of it?

Thinking about getting some Eurorack modules soon and I'd like to use Axoloti to control those with CV out from Axoloti.

Thanks

#30

What do you mean? the cv.ocd has 4 cv and 12 gate outputs.

#31

Sorry I dont know much about Eurorack yet.

I just ment how many outs you would get from Axoloti to control parameters on eurorack gear. so 4 for parameters and 12 for gates. Could use 8 for parameters. Maybe there are other options to look into with more cv outs

The link was helpful, thanks

#32

I was talking specifically about the cv.ocd which you just send midi to.

Too bad the axoloti doesn't do sysex (yet) so you can't load different patches.

Anyway, this seemd a more simple/direct way to get axoloti/midi->cv done in my setup

#33

That looks like a good solution, expensive, and doesn't utilise the functionality available already on axoloti though.

I'm more into building things myself, more fun, learn more and cost way less.

Haven't had much time for Axo recently, too busy with gigs over the summer here.

#34

Expensive? I was going to make a little box like this myself with a teensy, 2 DAC's and other components and surely it wouldn't have been this cheap or with the same features and programmability.

Indeed more integrated with the Axoloti would be great, and a fantastic learning experience.
But now I can focus on other bits in the Axoloti (ie. sequencing) and spend a little more time making music

#35

I see, I thought you meant you would buy a ready made module, doing it that way would be cheap also, and developing the software with arduino ide is probably easier as well.

But if you are going to build something you could add dacs and CVs to axoloti in much the same way.

#36

Yeah but not having the axoloti in the rack means my entire studio is more 'modular' as well

Still I'd like to see a nice axoloti shield with lots of cv-output possibilities.

#37

Also pretty cheap compared to for example Kenton Midi>CV converter. I have got another device from Hotch155 who makes the cv.ocd and it rocks. Low prices, hi value

#38

Any updates on this? Has anyone advanced?

Would be also cool to make a 1U module out of this.. Purely hypothetically

#39

I've been doing some experimenting. Depending on whether I can get midi (for sync) in from a 3.5mm jack and avoid the larger MIDI jacks, it seems possible to get it that skinny. I found that I could get the guitar jacks AND the tall USB jack off by methodically destroying them with needle-nose pliers, without even stressing the board much at all. I'm also working on ways to fabricate rack panels (which is going pretty well).

The headers might be a little tall but a 1U module seems achievable if you mounted it end-on. I'd probably settle for a wider HP panel so I could put a bunch of jacks in there. To my mind the tricky bit is voltage converting everything up/down to Eurorack voltages, as Axoloti will tend to be feeble compared to the voltages modular stuff wants to see.

It’s a shame Paul seems to have disappeared. He was working on some cool stuff in the Axo/Euro area, following up on the Euxoloti.

I’d be interested to see other takes on the same thing, though.
